Mounties announce Mitch Webber as next Men’s Basketball Head Coach
(SACKVILLE, NB) After a successful search, the Mounties are thrilled to appoint Mitch Webber as the new head coach of the men's basketball program. This announcement comes after long-time head coach Steve Chapman stepped down after 16 years at the helm.
Born in Saint John, NB but raised in Woodstock, NB, Coach Webber would find his passion for basketball under the tutelage of great coaches such as Coach Scott Jones. While at Woodstock High, the Thunder would go on to win three NBIAA AA provincial titles and in his senior year, Coach Webber would earn Most Valuable Player status while also being named school valedictorian. The importance placed on both academics and athletics is something that he would carry into his four-year career as a men's basketball student-athlete at Crandall University, where he was named a two-time CCAA National Scholar award recipient.
"We are thrilled to announce Coach Webber as the next head coach of our men's basketball program," explains Jacques Bellefleur, Director of Athletics and Recreation. "Mitch has a keen sense of the ACAA basketball landscape having played and coached in this conference for nearly a decade. His high basketball IQ, attention to detail and impressive communication skills have us excited for what's to come."
Coach Webber spent the last three years in a progressive coaching role under Coach Todd McKillop at Crandall University. During this time the Chargers men's basketball program was among the top defensive teams in the ACAA and always very competitive. Beyond the postsecondary level, Coach Webber has also led competitive youth programs; TH Elite U16 Boys, Basketball NB's U16 Boys, and is currently coaching Basketball NB's U15 Boys team as they prepare for Nationals in August.
"Mount Allison University has a storied history of both academic and athletic prowess," says Webber. I am humbled to have been selected, and my excitement and motivation are higher than ever, especially considering the caliber of players already in place."
Coach Webber lives in Moncton, NB with his partner Adia where he works as a high school teacher at Moncton High School. He has already assumed full responsibilities of the men's basketball program and is hard at work preparing for the 2024-25 season.
